Just an instant before the sky sobbed large drops of cold rain. Sometime I’ve felt like those trees out there this year. Alive and lucky but bracing. Holding still, understanding mother nature doesn’t know what pity is.
I’ve been back and forth to this lake since I was a little girl. I’ve got memories of catching bluegill and feeling sorry for them. So sorry in fact, I convinced my parents to let me take them home, and put them in a fish tank. I was very small. They ate live worms and surprisingly did OK. Don’t tell the rangers we eventually had to let them go a year later…. I’d like to think they had nice long lives. 🙂
